The Sigma Phi Beta retreat was incredible. I had fun despite the fact that the wheather was 22 degrees one day and 12 the next. Those in the picture are members of the Kappa Class, my class.

Finally school is over and I have a smile on my face... along with more wrinkles and a few white hairs. This semester was challenging but very rewarding. I am happy it is over and now it is time to indulge in some good Mexican winter festivities.

Por fin terminó el semester y tengo una gran sonrisa... y también mas arrugas y unas canas más. Este semestre estuvo difícil pero tuvo sus compensaciones. Estoy contento que ha terminado y es hora de deleitarme en las festividades de invierno mexicanas.

Many of us don't have the opportunity to go home for Thanksgiving. However, Sigma Phi Beta has its annual Turkey feast and we, as a brotherhood, gather to celebrate our blessings. There were many brothers present this year, but when this photo was taken, not everyone was around.

Muchos de nosotros no tenemos la oportunidad de ir a casa para el Día de Acción de Gracias. Sin embargo, Sigma Phi Beta mantiene su celebración anual y nosotros, como una hermandad, nos reunimos para celebrar nuestras bendiciones. During this last summer, yes I know, I'm going back to memory lane. I celebrated a relatives' birthday. We were in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. To all of us, just a two-hours drive from were we all live. Guess which one is my cousin and which one is the boyfriend? (I jsut got the picture.)

Finally, the pledge class period is over and now we have 10 new brothers. We started with 15 pledge but those who don’t deserved to be part of our brotherhood were depledged or quit on their own. It was fun… now we enjoy the rest of the semester before starting over in the spring…

Finalmente terminó el periodo de prueba para los nuevos miembros. Ahora tenemos 10 nuevos hermanos en la fraternidad. Comenzamos con 15 pero aquellos que no merecían ser parte de nuestra hermanda, o los sacamos o se fueron solos. Por ahora nos queda disfrutar el resto del semestre antes de comenzar de nuevo en la primavera.

My new play LLORONAS (The Crying Women) will have a workshop presentation on November 11 and 18. This is part of my thesis work and I am looking foward to see how the audience reacts to this play.

Today is October 16, 2006. I don’t even remember when was the last time I wrote an entry. I have been so busy with so much stuff that I have been suffering from sleep depravation, headaches and stress.

Hoy es Octubre 16, 2006. No recuerdo cuando fue la última vez que escribí algo para este blog. He estado tan ocupado con tantas cosas que sufro de insomnio, dolores de cabeza, y estrés.

Welcome to my last year of graduate school. It isn’t fun. It is all about work, work, work!

Bienvenidos a mi último año de postgrado. No es divertido. Es puro trabajo, trabajo, trabajo!

I have to say that if it wasn’t for the fraternity. I would go crazy. And thanks to the fact that this time we have a great pledge class, I am having some fun.

Tengo que admitir que si no fuera por al fraternidad, me volvería loco. Y gracias a que esta vez tenemos un buen grupo de prospectos, me he divertido.

Speaking of pledge class. The little ones (as I like to call them) played a prank on me. They decorated my car with balloons, confetti, toilet paper, and some obscene things. It was cute, but the worse part was that they dumped about a pound of flower at all over my truck. The result: a big mess for which they are paying.

Hablando de candidatos. Los pequeños (como me gusta llamarles) me hicieron una broma. Decoraron mi carro con globos, confeti, papel de baño y cosas obscenas. Eso estuvo bien, pero lo malo fue que se les ocurrió vaciar dos kilos de harina en mi camioneta. El resultado: un error muy grande por el cual están pagando.

School has been very excited. I have three classes, which keep me busy. Besides the classes, I have projects, which also keep me busy.

Las clases se han convertido en algo fascinante. Tengo tres cursos los cuales me mantienen ocupado. Aparte de las clases tengo algunos proyectos, los cuales también me tienen super ocupado.

I guess the most exciting thing going on right now is the production of one of my one-act plays. It is titled “MIDNIGHTS.”

It is the story of a man who wakes up to find out that he doesn’t know who he is, where he is, why he’s there and what has happened to him. With the help of a counselor, he starts remember everything. However, not everything is what it seems.

Creo que lo excitante en estos momentos es el hecho que una de mis obras de un acto se producirá a finales de Octubre y a principios de Noviembre. Se titula “MIDNIGHTS” y es la historia de un hombre que despierta sin recordar absolutamente nada. Con la ayuda de un psicólogo, comienza a recordar quien es, donde está, y porque está donde esta. Sin embargo, no todo encaja muy bien.

The show will be at the end of October and the beginning of November. Like anything else, I am very excited, but I try to keep my excitement as control as possible.

La verdad me agrada la idea de la obra y trato de controlar mis emociones lo más que puede, pues si les doy rienda suelta, no las podré controlar.

My house is two miles away from the university and it takes me 20 minutes to get to it, using my bicycle.

I am now in Tempe, Arizona, ready to start my last year of graduate school. The temperature is about 110 degrees and there is no way to walk half a block without sweating. And when it comes to sweating, I sweat like a pig.

Many of you have asked about my love life and my boyfriend. The reason is that I like to keep my love life to myself. Many of you, however, refer to this fact as something I want to hide.

Muchos de ustedes preguntan acerca de mi vida amorosa. No digo nada porque me gusta mantenerla en privado. Muchos de ustedes, sin embargo toman esto como que quiero ocultar el hecho de que tengo novio.

Here is the answer: My boyfriend and I don’t want to keep our relationship hidden; we just like to keep it private. But since many of you insist, I guess we just have to show you a few pictures of us together.

Mi respuesta es: No quiero ocultar nada solo quiero parte de mi vida fuera del conocimiento general. Pero como muchos han insistido, creo que les mostraré algunas fotos de mi novio y yo.

All the pictures are from this present year: The first one is from a party in January. The second one is from San Jose Gay Pride in June. And the last one is the famous picture that appeared in "The Advocate" Magazine.

My trip ended on July 18. Now I am back in California visiting my mother, brothers, sisters, and their children for the next three weeks. While I’m here, I need to get back in shape so I can wear my clothes before heading back to my last year of schooling at ASU.

Mi viaje terminó el 18 de julio. Ahora estoy de regreso en California visitando a mi mamá, mis hermanos, mis hermanas y sus hijos por tres semanas. Mientras estoy aquí, necesito ponerme en forma físicamente una vez más para así poder ponerme mi ropa, y poder regresar a la universidad y terminar mi último año de carrera.

I was back in Mexico City for my third and last time. Once again, I spent my time with my sister and her children, going out to the theatre, dinner, shopping, and nightclubs.

Regresé a la Ciudad de México por tercera y última vez. Una vez más estuve con mi hermana y sus hijos, saliendo al teatro, a cenar, de compras y a clubes nocturnos.

Of course, no trip is complete without a little political uprising. Due to the presidential elections results and because one of the main candidates didn’t accept the results, protests and strikes started to happen in the ZOCALO. While shopping, I happened to be near el ZOCALO so I went there to have a more close and personal experience. I learned that the PAN (our version of the Republican party) candidate was unofficially named the winner but the PRD (our version of the Democratic party) candidate accused the PAN of dirty dealings. For this reason, the PRD candidate was demanding a vote-by-vote recount. Does this bring any memories?

Claro que un viaje no se completa sin algo de política. Gracias a los resultados de las elecciones, uno de los candidatos no aceptó el perder y pues se organizó mucho relajo en el ZOCALO. Mientras yo andaba de compras noté el relajo y me acerqué un poco para ver más. Descubrí que el PDR quiere que cuenten “voto por voto” mientras el PAN se corona vencedor. Según el candidato del PDR, el PAN hizo trampa. ¿Les recuerdo eso a algo que pasó aquí en el 2000?

My next stop was the city of Puebla, Mexico. La Ciudad de los Angeles. This is the city where the battle between the French Army and the Mexican Indians took place, thus having a holiday known as “Cinco de Mayo.” And no, it isn’t Mexican Independence Day.

Puebla, la Ciudad de los ángeles fue mi siguiente parada. Es en esta ciudad donde la gran batalla entre las tropas francesas y los indios mexicanos se llevó a cabo, convirtiéndose así en un día especial llamado “Cinco de Mayo.” Y no, no es el día de la independencia.

It is in this city where the two famous volcanoes stand side to side: The Ixtacihuatl and the Popocatepec. Both having sleeping but once in a while they snoore, scaring the residents of the city.

Es también en esta ciudad donde se encuentran los dos volcanes famosos uno a un lado del otro: El Ixtacihuatl y el Popocatepec. Los dos han estado dormido pero de vez en cuando, roncan asustando a la gente de la ciudad.

Puebla is also known for its MOLE and its Chiles en Nogada, which I ate with gusto.

Puebla también es conocido por su mole y sus chiles en Nogada, los cuales comí con gusto.

Another great experience in Oaxaca was my visit to the small town of TULE, only 11 miles away. The town is famous for its “Tule Tree.”

Otra gran experiencia fue mi visita a un pequeño pueblo fuera de la ciudad llamado TULE (solo 6 kilómetros.) El pueblo es famoso por su “Árbol de Tule.”

At over 2000 years old, “El Arbol de Tule,” which is actually an Ahuehuete Cypress, is amongst the oldest living trees in the world. With a 33 feet diameter trunk it is also considered by many to be the broadest tree in the world. The circumference of the trunk is 178 feet. It is over 130 feet high; its foliage diameter is over 170 feet and weighs over 500 tons.

Casi más de 2000 años de viejo, “El Árbol de Tule”, que en realidad es un Ciprés Ahuehuete, es el árbol más viejo entre todos los árboles. Con un tronco de 10 metros es considerado el más grande del mundo. La circunferencia del árbol es de 54 metros, casi 70 metros de alto, su diámetro completo es casi de 90 metros y pesa 500 toneladas.

The food and the market place are incredible, but after visiting the tree, I have no words to describe anything else.

La comida y el mercado son algo especial en el pueblo pero después de ver el árbol no me quedaron palabras para otra cosa.

My visit to Oaxaca was incredible, but due to the strikes I couldn’t see everything. I plan to go back in the future.

Mi visita a Oaxaca fue algo increíble pero debido a la huelga no pude ver mucho. Tengo planes de regresar en un futuro no muy lejano.

5 miles away from Oaxaca City and high in a mountaintop we found MONTE ALBAN, once the main capital of the Zapotecs. The Ruins extend over the peaks of 3 mountain ranges that converge in Oaxaca’s central valley at an altitude of about 5200 ft. There are lots of codices, which for the first time I saw face to face instead of looking at them in books. It was a very overwhelming experience.

2 kilómetros y medio fuera de la ciudad y en lo alto de un gran cerro se encuentra MONTE ALBAN, que en su tiempo era la gran ciudad capital de los Zapotecas. Las ruinas se extienden a lo largo de grandes planadas de varias montañas a una altura de 1,600 metros. Existen grandes códices que por primera vez miré en persona en lugar de verlos en un libro. Las emociones son inexplicables.

Nightlife in Oaxaca City is fun, but due to the fact that there was a schoolteachers’ strike, the main city’s plaza was taken by the teacher so it wasn’t as beautiful as it could have been. Still, there were a lot of tourist, mostly Germans and French.

La vida nocturna en la ciudad de Oaxaca es divertida. Pero debido a que los maestros estaban en huelga, la plaza principal estaba ocupada por ellos así que las cosas no fueron como se esperaba. Aún así, había mucho turismo, la mayoría franceses e ingleses.

There is a seven block (all in a straight line) section of the city known as the “andadero” or walk way. It is called the “andadero” because people walk up and down the streets visiting bars, dance clubs, restaurants, shops, libraries, cafes, chocolate restaurants, (where the main drink is hot chocolate), bookstores, jewelry stores, etc… No cars are allowed in this section of the city from about 5 pm until 5 am. Yes, it is fun! Yes it is packed! And yes, it is full of hot men and women so the “andadero” becomes the main place to “meet” one, two or three men or women or both.

Existe un área de la ciudad de siete manzana (en línea recta) conocido como “El Andadero.” Se llama así porque la gente sube y baja por esa recta visitando bares, clubes de baile, restaurantes (donde la bebida principal es chocolate) librerías, joyerías, y mucho más. Los autos no están permitidos en esta área de las 5 de la tarde a las 5 de la mañana. Sí, es muy divertido caminar en El Andadero. Siempre está lleno y siempre hay hombres y mujeres muy sexy. El Andadero se convierte en el lugar para “conocer” a uno o dos hombres o mujeres o a las dos cosas.

Oaxaca’s official alcoholic drink is MEZCAL, made out of Maguey. To understand more about the drink, Luis and I visited “La Fábrica del Mezcal,” where a very talented guide took us through the factory in order to show us in detail how mezcal is made. It was a fascinating learning experience. At the end of the tour, the guide made us taste all types of mezcal, so yes, we were both drunk. See the bottles on the counter? That's how many different mezcal we tasted. I was soon seeing pink flying elephants and pigs.

La bebida oficial del estado de Oaxaca es el MEZCAL, hecho del maguey. Para entender la bebida Luis y yo visitamos “La Fábrica del Mezcal” donde un talentoso guía nos mostró con detalle todo el proceso para hacer mezcal. Fue algo muy interesante y educativo. Al final del “tour,” el guía nos ofreció pruebas de los diferentes mezcales que se hacen, así que sí, estábamos tomados. ¿Ven las botellas en el mostrador? Cada botella es un mezcal diferente que probamos. Muy pronto comencé a ver elefantes y cochinitos rosas volando alrededor de mí.

24 miles outside Oaxaca City we found MITLA (in Nahuatl it means “Place of the Death.” And it is rightfully so because the entire ruins in MITLA are nothing but large pyramids that serve as tombs for high priests and kings of the Zapotec and Mixtec tribes.

12 kilómetros a las afuera de la Ciudad de Oaxaca se encuentra MITLA (en Nahualt significa “Lugar de los Muertos.”) Y ese nombre es perfecto pues las ruinas de MITLA son grandes pirámides que sirvieron de tumbas para sacerdotes y reyes de las tribus Zapotecas y Mixtecas.

Something fascinating about these ruins, other than the fact they are massive and very impressive, is their decorative carving. Everything is very linear and geometric, something that was combined with hieroglyphics done on red stone.

Algo fascinante acerca de las ruinas, aparte de ser impresionantemente enormes, es su decoración. Todo es linear y geométrico, algo que se combinaba con el jeroglífico hecho en piedra color rojo.

During the Spanish conquest, the conquistadores destroyed most of the pyramids and built churches a top of the pyramids thus replacing the ancient Zapotec and Mixtec Gods for Christian Gods.

Durante la conquista española, los conquistadores destruyeron la mayor parte de las pirámides construyendo iglesias encima de la pirámides. De esta manera remplazaban los dioses de los Zapotecas y los Mixtecas con los dioses cristianos.
